ComShare 550 was a single line unit with 3 ports (3 linked + 1 individual).  This was a passive unit meaning it did not answer the incoming call.  It monitored the telephone line and if the FAX CNG tone or DTMF transfer codes were detected, the call was routed accordingly. The Line Routing Switch 4.1 not only offers this passive mode but also automatic and distinctive ring modems. It can even do both at the same time.

Due to the nature of its operation, the Answering Machine/Phone port would ring on every incoming call and Caller ID was received by the connected devices.  Every phone on the line would ring and receive Caller ID.  The Line Routing Switch 4.1 is the closest an superior replacement – the user no longer needs to configure for the home mode of operation.
