Commonly Asked Questions

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHY DO SOME FAX CALLS GO TO MY TELEPHONE?

Sometimes FAX calls originate from equipment that does not identify itself as a FAX machine. You can manually transfer the call by dialing the device selection code for your FAX (factory set to *2). See section 2.1. Activating CALL OPTI-MIZER may eliminate this problem at night. See section 4.2.3 for details. Also, you may need to change auto-FAX tone detection. See section 6.4.

WHY DO I SOMETIMES GET A BUSY SIGNAL WHEN I PICK UP MY PHONE?

The data protection feature of your ATX-250 disconnects your telephone when your FAX or MODEM is in use. Wait for your FAX or MODEM to finish, and try your telephone again.

AFTER I CHANGE THE CONFIGURATION SWITCHES, WHY DOES THE ATX-250 NOT CHANGE ITS OPERATION?

Any time you change the configuration switches on the back of your ATX-250 you must unplug its power cord for about two seconds to activate the new settings.

WHY DOES MY ATX-250 REPEATEDLY CLICK-CLICK WHEN I PICK UP THE LINE?

If you cannot get a dial tone, and only hear a click-click every two seconds or so, the ATX-250 does not have a good connection to the phone company. Check your installation and wiring for loose or open connections. Connect a single-line telephone directly to the incoming line. Check for dial tone and proper operation. A dead line should be reported to your telephone company.

WHY DOES MY FAX ANSWER ALL INCOMING CALLS?

Your ATX-250 may not be getting any power. Check the LED indicator on the front panel. If the LED is not lit, check the power connector, the AC adaptor, and the AC power source.

I ENTER *2 ON MY PHONE TO TRANSFER AN INCOMING CALL TO MY FAX. WHY DOES THE CALL NOT TRANSFER?

Some multi-line key telephones will not generate tones after receiving an incoming call. You may need to activate the Protected Hook Flash feature. Refer to section 6.3.

WHY DO I SOMETIMES HEAR RINGING IN THE BACKGROUND WHEN I ANSWER THE PHONE?

Your ATX-250 may not be installed as the only device directly connected to the telephone line. To determine this, disconnect the cord from the LINE jack of your ATX-250. If you can get a dial tone on any of your telephones, your installation is not correct.

IS THE ATX COMPATIBLE WITH PHONE COMPANY VOICE MAIL AND/OR CALL FORWARDING SERVICES?
Since the ATX must always “answer" the ring from the phone company to do its job, there will never be an un-answered call situation which means that the only time a message will be taken by the phone company VM will be when the line is already busy and another party tries to call the number. The “busy” message service can be of benefit to some people if they frequently occupy the line for lengthy periods. An on-site answering machine will be necessary to take messages when the line is available but you can't answer.

HOW CAN I MAKE CALLER ID WORK WITH THE ATX-250?
The current version of this product has a 3 second delay before it answers on the first ring. This will allow the CIDdata to be sent by the phone company before they view the call as answered. This will enable a CID unit placed ahead (on the line side) of the ATX-250 to see the Called ID. Earlier versions did not have the CID delay. To get the first Telco ring and CID information passed through the ATX-250 to the device side requires a custom software module in the ATX-250. Contact Technical Support at 1-800-535-4651 if you are in need of this additional module.

HOW DO I PROGRAM THE ATX?
The ATX-250 uses Dip Switches for most basic control of functions. Specific instructions are provided in this Operations Manual. It explains the process in detail.

ALL EQUIPMENT HEARS ALL INCOMING RINGS. WHAT'S WRONG?
You have probably lost power to the ATX. Check for red LED glowing.

ALL INCOMING DEVICES RING TO DEVICE 1. WHAT'S WRONG?
Your ATX may not be in the correct mode or configuration. Check that Dip switch 6 is up to route Auto (CNG identified) Fax calls to the Device 2 port.

INCOMING CALLS INTENDED FOR EQUIPMENT ON PORT 2 ARE STILL RINGING MY PHONE. WHY?
Insure the calling equipment is using the correct Security Access Code (SAC) string as shown in the Operations Manual Section 2.2.

CAN I CONNECT MORE THAN 1 MODEM TO THE ATX?
Yes. Generally, any analog telephony equipment can be attached to any device port as desired to meet individual needs.

I AM SHARING THIS LINE FOR FAX AND MODEM TYPE EQUIPMENT WITH NO INBOUND VOICE CALLS. WHAT IS THE BEST CONFIGURATION?
We recommend connecting the FAX to Device 1 and change Dip switch 6 to the “off” position. This will let all FAX calls, with and without CNG tone, find the FAX machine. The Fax port can be used for any other equipment, including a phone for outbound calls.
